Audio Description

Summertime (Instrumental) © G. Gershwin 1935 The Doors Live At The Matrix San Francisco, March 1967 John & Robbie drove in John's VW van with the equipment, Jim drove up w/his lover du jour, while Dorothy & Ray traveled in her '63 VW Beetle. They came up the 5 freeway, driving hard and fast. They were headed north for the land of beatnicks...it was like being Jack Kerouack ON THE ROAD with his cool Japanese chick at his side, racing past Bakersfield and points beyond, toward Fresno and points north. The legendary cities of California Dreams-John Stainbeck country-on the road to San Francisco, to bombard them with Doors music. They pulled into the great city and headed for Broadway, where they stayed at the Suisse Hotel, upstairs above Finocchio's famous bawdy, raucous gay/drag/transvestite bar. Broadway was the site of the club where Carol Doda performed too. She was the first silicone-aided topless dancer... The tourists loved that joint-them of course didn't bother, 'cause they were headed to Marty Balin's joint, The Matrix. They ate across the street at the Broadway Pool Hall consuming GREAT submarine sandwiches, long SF sourdough heroes. They were loaded with Molinari salami. Molinari's main outlet was just around the corner on Colubus Avenue. Those subs were the best they ever had, save for a little Italian sandwich stand outside of Fort Monmouth (NJ), 'cause nobody can make a better sub than they make in Jersey. For Manzarek, Fujikawa and Morrison, the aspiring beats, it was living the life they read about during their college days and they were THERE. ******************************************************************************* WMG owns the copyright to this material.
